Police said they met with the accident when their SUV rammed into a stationary truck from behind. The Congress leader, identified as Ravi Bhushan Wadhwan, died at the spot while the driver is recuperating from injuries at a hospital in Greater Noida.
According to police, the accident took place at around 5.30 am, about 24 kms away from zero point in Greater Noida. Wadhwan was on his way to Allahabad from the national Capital in his Fortuner car.
Eyewitnesses said when the vehicle reached Robupura area, the driver of the vehicle could not spot the truck and rammed into it. Passers-by also claimed that the SUV was at very high speed and the driver had lost control over the wheels before the mishap.
The impact of the collision was so severe that both the vehicles damaged completely. The expressway’s rescue team, along with local police immediately reached the spot.
The victims were taken out from the damaged car by using gas cutter and were rushed to the nearby Kailash Hospital, where Wadhwan was declared brought dead and the driver was admitted at the ICU.
The driver of the truck, who had parked his vehicle on the expressway, fled from the spot.
While the police have seized the vehicles, no case has been registered in this regard. ‘We have sent Wadhwan’s body for postmortem examination and have informed his family. We will register the case once we receive a written complaint. We are also trying to identify the owner of the truck so we could apprehend the truck driver,’ said a senior police officer.
