In keeping with the promises made by the Delhi police at its annual press conference held on 3 February, the department has moved to provide a refresher course to its personnel so that they are adept at dealing with social changes.
Apart from the police training college, all the departments of the Delhi police will be facilitated with a subsidiary training unit to provide training to police officers.
A specialised training centre has been set up in the Rajinder Nagar area that offers around 326 courses. The courses cover around 55 policing areas. ‘It was becoming impossible to provide training to each of 85,000 police personnel because earlier, there was only one police training college along with six other training institutes. We have designed several new programmes to train all police officers in short span of time to get instant results,’ SN Srivastava, special police commissioner (training), told Millennium Post.
Earlier, Delhi police was struggling because of limited classrooms where guest speakers used to provide training to the volunteer cops. But after the recent order issued by BS Bassi, Delhi police chief, more specialised training units will be formed in all the districts, security, traffic, First Battalion, Third Battalion and PCR.
‘The objective of these training units is to augment the training capacity of Delhi police so that every police personnel is able to undergo at least 7 days training once in a year. For better approachability, the training units will be located centrally within the district to curtail time loss. These units will have appropriate layout design and ambiance to reduce distractions and aid concentration. Adequate lightning and furniture for about 40-50 trainees will be arranged,’ Srivastava said.
To ensure that the training is provided to all the 85,000 police force, the records of the training sessions, trainees and visiting faculty will be maintained. Joint police commissioner (training) will hold a monthly meeting of training officers to discuss monthly training reports to better the quality of training.
