The state government has sounded an alert across Bihar, particularly in the border districts following Bhatkal’s arrest. Later in the day, the NIA sleuths produced both of them before the court of Motihari’s chief judicial magistrate S P Shukla who granted three day transit remand of both terrorists.
Several local youth of northern Bihar, particularly those belonging to the Mithilanchal region of the state were recruited by IM’s Darbhanga module, a brainchild of Yasain Bhatkal for carrying out terror attacks at different places of the country.
Bihar Police are hopeful of carrying out an extensive drive against active terror units in the state on the basis of the confessional statements to be made by Yasin Bhatkal during his interrogation.
State additional director general of police (Headquarters) Ravindra Kumar told newspersons in Patna that Yasin Bhatkal and Asadullah Akhtar were arrested by a joint team of state police and NIA near Nahar Chowk at Raxaul in East Champaran district of the state.
Acting on a tip off, sleuths belonging to NIA and East Champaran district police arrested Bhatkal and his close associate. He said that both of them have been handed over to the NIA for the further investigation.
State police chief Abhayanand told newspersons that it was Bihar Police that mainly helped NIA and other government agencies to nab Bhatkal and his close associate.
He said that a team of Bihar Police officials have interrogated Bhatkal at a secret place after he was arrested.
Yasin Bhatkal’s Darbhanga module is believed to be involved in several terror attacks, including 13/7 Mumbai blasts, Pune serial blasts and Hyderabad bomb blasts this year.
The hand of IM has also been widely suspected in the Bodh Gaya serial blasts, carried out in July this year.
Meanwhile, the Bihar Police interrogated the arrested terrorist Yasin Bhatkal and it is believed that they were able to extract some vital clues from him during the questioning.
Sources said that It is believed that Yasin Bhatkal was in touch with around 800-1000 youths of Darbhanga, Madhubani and Samsastipur districts and used to employ a few of them for some terror attack.
After the attack, youths who perpetrated the terrorist violence would disappear from their native places only to return after some time.
Since majority of them were used as sleeper agents of the terrorist organisation, they were able to give a slip to the security personnel on several occasions, sources added.
The 30-year-old Yasin has been on the run since 2008 and is wanted in a string of terror attacks in Ahmedabad, Surat, Bangalore, Pune, Delhi and Hyderabad.
