Flyover parallel to RTR carriageway gets approval

Update: 2013-08-28 23:21 GMT
To decongest the traffic bottleneck at Rao Tula Ram Marg (RTR) flyover between south Delhi and Dhaula Kuan, the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) has approved a Public Works Department proposal to build a flyover parallel to the existing single carriageway.

The proposal, which was approved on Tuesday, had been pending with DUAC since long. PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the proposal for construction of this flyover was approved by the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC)  in April..

‘It was proposed to construct a three-lane flyover parallel to the existing one-way RTR flyover for smooth movement of traffic from IIT Delhi to the airport. The flyover proposed to be constructed will start from the elevated carriageway of Munirka flyover, running on stilts over the existing carriageway so that the traffic at the ground-level carriageway could move freely,’ the PWD minister said.

Chauhan further said that the new flyover would run parallel to the existing flyover at RTR Marg and end near Niryat
Bhawan. The length of this flyover would be 2.2 kilometre. The estimated cost of the construction would be approxemately Rs 125 crore.

PWD minister Chauhan said that after clearance from DUAC the proposal will now be brought up in the next Delhi cabinet meeting and tenders will be brought out immediately.
Construction of a three-lane 9 km flyover emerging out as an arm of the existing six-lane flyover connecting Vivekanand Marg, Nelson Mandela Marg and Poorvi Marg intersections and further running parallel to existing 9 metre flyover combining RTR Marg and BJ Marg intersection was also proposed.
