The grotesque love story of Chand and Fiza came to a tragic end when it was discovered that the former assistant advocate general of Haryana had been lying dead at her Mohali home for the past few days. Fiza Mohammed, the estranged wife of the former deputy chief minister of Haryana Chand Mohammed was found dead under mysterious circumstances. Chand and Fiza were earlier known as Chander Mohan and Anuradha Bali respectively before they converted to Islam to get married.
The body of the 39-year-old Bali was found lying in her bed at her residence in a decomposed condition. Fiza lived alone at the Senior Citizen HIG Flats Society in Sector 48 in Mohali near Chandigarh. The news of Bali's death created a furore though she did not enjoy cordial relations with her neighbours.
The senior superintendent of police [Mohali] G P S Bhullar told the media that her body was recovered from the ground floor bedroom and was in a decomposed state. Bhullar said that prima facie it looked that she had died four to five days back. Bhullar refused to say whether it was a natural death or a case of murder or suicide. 'We can’t say anything at this stage. We are working on several theories. No suicide note has so far been recovered,' Bhullar said.
Fiza’s lawyer R Mahajan said that it was unlikely that she would commit suicide. He suspected foul play. 'Her bedroom was on the first floor. The body has been found on the ground floor. It is very strange,' Mahajan said.
The police was informed about something amiss at Bali's house by her uncle Satpal around 10 am on Monday. He contacted the police when Bali did not respond to repeated knockings at the door and call bell. The neighbour and her uncle also informed the police about the foul smell emanating from the house.
A forensic team was also summoned by the police to examine the body and the spot before it was sent for a postmortem examination. Bali's sister Monika, who also reached the spot, refused to divulge much on the matter. 'The incident is quite dreadful and shocking. I and my family is in a state of shock, and we are not in a position to talk,' Monika said.
Chand Mohammed, who had reconverted to Hinduism after breaking off with Fiza and returned to his family, said, 'I had no link with her for the last two years. Hence, I can’t say anything, nor do I want to comment on it.'
According to the neighbours, Bali had been living alone in the house after the break up with Chand Mohammed. She looked depressed, especially after her mother passed away. 'We were not on talking terms with her. Most of the time she complained either to police authorities or others about our kids and adults, hence we disconnected from her,' said a neighbour.
