The officials at the fire department in the national Capital take every call very seriously including those regarding rescue of animals. The data shows that the fire department receive as many as 1,000 calls every year seeking <g data-gr-id="36">help</g> of the fire department to rescue the animals.
Similarly, on Monday, the fire department received a call in the morning that a cat has been stuck in a deep well in South Delhi’s Sanjay Van area. Immediately, three <g data-gr-id="40">fire fighters</g> along with the rescue equipment rushed to the spot. It took them around an hour to take out the cat from the well.
“I was jogging in the park when I heard the cat scream. Somehow, I managed to detect that it was stuck in a deep well. I made a call to the fire department and waited for them to come,” the caller said.
After an hour-long rescue operation using a rope staircase, the cat was rescued. It received bruises and was immediately given medical aid. “Receiving the information about the cat being trapped in a well, officials of an NGO Friendicoes (dealing with pets and stray animals) also reached the spot. After an on-spot preliminary health check-up, it was found to have sustained no injuries and was released to its natural habitat,” the official in the department said.
Speaking to Millennium Post, a senior official in the department said: “On an average we get around three to four calls regarding animal rescue. We take these calls seriously and send officials to the spot. The officials do not require any special training to rescue the <g data-gr-id="41">animals</g> but they have been instructed to be more sensitive.”
“At times, the officials find it difficult to rescue the animals in which the <g data-gr-id="33">fire fighters</g> also get injured. For instance, while rescuing a buffalo who was stuck in a well where some harmful gas was spreading, five officials were critically injured including a station officer who remained in the hospital for more than 15 days.”
He further added: We have never failed to rescue any animal. It is an achievement for us that we have succeed in every rescue operation related to animals including birds, buffaloes, cows, dogs, cats,” he said.
