A municipal employee and his wife have suffered severe burn injuries in a tragic kitchen fire at their residence in outer Delhi’s Narela area, police said on Saturday. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, which referred them to LNJP hospital in central Delhi.

While Balwan Singh (55), a grade four MCD employee, was admitted with 48 per cent burn injuries, his wife Ishwanti (50) was reported to be in a more serious condition with 60 per cent burn injuries. The couple have three daughters and all of them are married. The incident was reported around 9.30 pm on Friday evening when Iswanti was cooking the dinner and Balwan was watching TV in the living room. He rushed to the kitchen after he heard his wife’s scream and saw that her clothes were on fire. In a bid to save Ishwanti, Balwan’s clothes caught fire too. The problem was compounded with other objects in the kitchen catching fire within minutes.
