FIR registered over screening of banned documentary on Nirbhaya

A trial court on March 4 had banned the broadcast of the interview of December 16, 2012 gang-rape convict Mukesh Singh, conducted in July 2013 inside Tihar jail, until further orders. But on Thursday, independent filmmaker Ketan Dixit and few of his associates had allegedly held a screening of the documentary in Ravi Das camp where the four accused used to reside.

The FIR has been registered under the Section 188 of IPC (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) at RK Puram police station. “Nobody has been named in the FIR so far. Police have launched the investigation in connection with the screening of this documentary,” Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.

On Thursday evening, the group that had screened the documentary claimed that the documentary was screened near the accommodation of accused brothers Ram Singh, who allegedly killed himself in jail and Mukesh Singh, who was interviewed for the documentary.

According to sources, Delhi Police will soon question all the persons behind the screening but may refrain from arresting them. As many as 40 people, mostly women, were the viewers in the screening. “We started the screening at around 4 pm when most of the men in the cluster had yet not returned from work, So the turnout was low,” said the group coordinator.

On March 8, the same group had held screening of the documentary at Roop Dhanu village in Agra district of Uttar Pradesh, which was attended by more than 80 villagers. The group further claimed that they would hold more screenings of the controversial documentary.

Earlier, a trial court had restrained the media from broadcasting or publishing the interview of Mukesh Singh after Delhi Police had registered an FIR in this regard and moved the court seeking restraint.
