A 20-year-old woman was allegedly smothered to death at a guest house in south-west Delhi by her fiancé, police said on Tuesday. The accused is a Navy officer and has been arrested by Delhi police. The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained.

On Sunday evening, the couple checked into a guest house called Neel Gagan in Sagarpur area, posing as a married couple. The accused had submitted his ID proof at the reception. On Sunday night he went out leaving the victim identified as Priyanka Kumari at the guest house. Mohit, the accused, failed to return till Monday morning.

On Monday at around 8.30 am, guest house staff knocked at the door to provide room service but failed to get any response from inside. Further after waiting for a couple of hours, the staff broke open the door. Her body was found lying on the floor. Immediately the police was informed about the sight. She was immediately rushed to the nearby hospital where she was declared dead.
Prima facie, it appears that she was smothered to death on Sunday evening. ‘Her body has been sent for the post-moterm and the reports are awaited,’ a police official said.

Kumari hails from Rajasthan and was currently residing with her sister in Delhi in Sagarpur area in a rented accommodation. Her sister is working as a constable in Delhi police department. Kumari was working as a traffic police constable.

According to police, six months ago the couple was engaged. Three months after their engagement, family members of the victim came to know about Mohit’s alcohol addiction. Once this aspect came to light, Kumari’s parents were against the marriage.

On Sunday, Mohit contacted Kumari and influenced her to stay with him for few days. Mohit took the permission of Kumari’s sister as well. In the evening they checked-in at a guest house where the incident took place.

‘On Tuesday, Mohit was arrested from Gurgaon and has been slapped with the murder charges under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code,’ the official said. ‘Further investigation is underway,’ he added.
