VELLORE: The 22nd annual V C Rajagopalachariar (VCR)memorial lecture was held at Vellore Institute of Technology on December 19. This year, the lecture was delivered by Retired Justice K N Basha.
Speaking at the event, Justice Basha shared his thoughts about V C Rajagopalachariar. He said that it was rare to come across humanitarian advocates like VCR and that till the end, he extended all possible help to the poor. Rajagopalachariar was not only a guide to several junior advocates, but he also set an example of how a case should be conducted.
Basha revealed that he learned about VIT a long time ago and also read several news reports. But after visiting the university, VIT seemed like an overseas University to him. He said that a university which was started with as much as 100 students, has achieved a lot over time with now enrolling the count of over 38,000 students.
The welcome speech was given by Dr P Subhashree, Dean, VIT Business School, followed by a tribute to VCR by advocates T M Vijayaraghavalu, N Ramanathan and R V Varadarajan.
Dr G Viswanathan, a junior to VCR and now the Founder and Chancellor of VIT also shared his memories of the advocate on the occasion of VCR memorial lecture. While delivering the presidential address, Dr Viswanathan said: "He is known for his simplicity and is also a very good human being. Staying true to his wisdom, he always delivered his lectures with facts and statistics, in any topic he had to."
Agreeing with Justice Basha, Dr Viswanathan also said that VCR did not have any penchant for wealth, fame, money and even health. "He had sacrificed everything for the sake of people's welfare alone. A staunch Gandhian, VCR never wore footwear and lived in a rented home. He would travel between his home and the court in a cycle rickshaw.
The guests at the event remembered V C Rajagopalachariar as an advocate who apart from being an icon to most of the young lawyers, was an outstanding human being. He used to appeal advocates to pursue their jobs with a certain amount of spiritual fervour and serve their profession with honesty and dedication.
