Indonesian flavour in Sapphire's latest dance performance

Update: 2019-02-20 14:51 GMT

Adding another feather to its cap, Sapphire has been selected by ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) to perform in its prestigious Horizon series on February 22, Friday, 7 pm at Satyajit Ray Auditorium, ICCR, Kolkata

Sapphire Creations Dance Co completed the ICCR Tour of Indonesia in December 2018, and will now be enthralling the dance enthusiasts of the City of Joy. The troupe toured four cities of Indonesia between December 16-24 as a Diplomatic Cultural Delegation, to represent India with a 10 member team. Sapphire performed in cities like Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Medan.

Its itinerary also included a workshop in the Mahatma Gandhi International School in Jakarta along with interactive sessions by leading dancers, choreographers and teachers of Indonesia.

On the evening of February 22, Sapphire will present 'Sapphirescope'– an amazing amalgam of dance, music, visuals with fusion contemporary and popular dances.

The performance has been curated keeping in mind 'the rich history of shared tradition', 'connection that India has with Indonesia – particularly the connection of Rabindranath Tagore with this island nation as well as 'Batik'.

Sapphire has divided the 70 minutes long program into three parts. 'Culture', the first segment, emphasises on the culture of India by fusing tradition and modernity. Amalgamation of Acro-Yoga and South East Asian Martial Arts along with poetry from India (including Bengal), will be other highlights.

The second part is 'Conversations'– where the focus will be on the inspiration of Indonesia in Tagore's thoughts and work with poetry from Geetanjali, and performances of the Seasons of India.

The final segment is 'Celebration' – the emphasis is on indulgence into a fun, frolic, and fiesta. It will focus on presenting aerial works and fusing Indonesian traditional music with modern compositions, which ultimately will celebrate the tour and the cultural relationship between India and Indonesia.

It was indeed an exciting year for Sapphire. They had completed the tour of Kazakhstan in September 2018, and were preparing for USA tour in 2019, when this tour came as a pleasant surprise and acknowledgment of their untiring effort from the last 26 years. This was their 23rd international tour in about 21 countries.
