Families of uniformed forces entitled to Rs 1 cr compensation: Delhi govt
The Delhi government on Wednesday, approved of a policy to provide compensation worth Rs 1 crore to the families of ‘uniformed forces’, who lose their lives in performing dangerous duties in the national Capital. The compensation is the highest in the country and is around three times that of the compensation paid to the security personnel collectively by Central government and states.
“The family members of security personnel employed in Delhi police, armed forces, paramilitary forces and other uniformed forces losing their lives in the line of duty would be eligible for compensation,” said Manish Sisodia, Deputy Chief Minister, Delhi informing of the decision of the cabinet meeting.
He further added that the marshals to be deployed by Delhi government in buses and vulnerable places for women security would also be covered under the compensation scheme. “The compensation policy will also cover the families of uniformed personnel killed on duty outside Delhi, but whose families reside in the national Capital,” he added.
According to sources, the highest compensation paid by the Centre and the state government combined so far was nearly Rs 38 lakh each to the families of the 75 CRPF men slain in a Naxal attack in Dantewada in 2010. Subsequently, paramilitary men slain in action get a similar amount of compensation from the Centre and the state government combined.
It’s important to mention that in his previous 49-day government, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced the first-ever highest compensation of Rs 1 crore to a Delhi Police constable killed by the liquor mafia. The constable Vinod Kumar was killed on deputation with excise department of Delhi government in the Ghitorni area of Delhi in December, 2013 during an encounter with liquor mafias.
As the new policy comes into force, there will be no need for the Delhi government to announce compensation in each case as eligible personnel would get it as their rights.
