Faizabad still on its toes, curfew stays on

The situation in temple town of Faizabad remained tense for the second day on Friday after curfew was imposed following a group clash during immersion of Durga idol.

The state government has suspended three officers and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has ordered Rs 5 lakh as compensation for those whose shops were gutted in the fire.

The district administration has decided not to relax curfew despite a demand to   do so for the Friday namaz. District Magistrate Deepak Agarwal said that situation was tense hence the administration did not want to take any chances.

The authorities are yet to decide on giving permission to hold Rajgaddi Mahotsav on Saturday, he said. This Rajgaddi Mahotasav is held over two days and signifies Lord Ram’s ascendency to seat of power. A big mela and religious function is held on this occasion. ‘Nothing has been decided as yet.

We are waiting for the situation to improve. The situation is turning normal. Patrolling has been intensified to prevent any untoward incident,’ the DM said. Agarwal said that a magisterial probe has been ordered on the communal clashes and ADM(Finance and Revenue)J P Tiwari would hold the inquiry.

Two people were reported to be killed in the violence while more than 20 others received injuries during the clash after shops were set ablaze. The government has suspended ADM(City) Srikant Mishra and SP(City) Ramji Yadav along with Inspector Kotwali and City Magistrate for laxity in the duty.
