In the midst of Deepawali bonhomie, it also became increasingly clear that the party’s estranged ally Shiv Sena would offer support to the BJP-led government. Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray is likely to meet prime minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai on Saturday.

On Thursday, Gadkari, whose name had been floated by several BJP MLAs from Vidarbha for the chief ministerial post, had a meeting with Fadnavis and later told media persons that he has no plans to return to state politics. Earlier this week, Fadnavis’ candidature for the top post had suffered a setback after a group of BJP legislators demanded that Gadkari should be made chief minister. But it is now almost certain that Fadnavis is going to be the next chief minister of Maharashtra.

Despite emerging as the single largest party, BJP has not been able to form the government so far as it failed to win majority. Earlier, NCP extended outside support to the saffron party, which was rejected by party leaders in their internal meetings.

Shiv Sena’s alliance with the BJP become clear after it was confirmed that its MPs would attend the high tea to be hosted by Modi for NDA allies on 26 October. Earlier, on 25 September, BJP and Shiv Sena had formally decided to end their 25-year-old electoral alliance in Maharashtra.

‘Our chief Uddhav Thackerayji has asked us to meet BJP leaders in Delhi. Maharashtra has given both parties a good mandate as it wants a stable government, and keeping the sentiments of the people in mind we will definitely provide Maharashtra a stable government,’ senior Sena leader Anil Desai told reporters in Mumbai. He said: ‘We will sit together once again on Monday and decide how we can respect the mandate people have given to both the parties. PM has organised this get together for all NDA allies where he will be putting forth new ideas. We have received an invitation and all our MPs will be attending it.’

Desai refused to comment whether Uddhav Thackeray will attend the meet or not. Sources said he may meet Modi on Saturday in Mumbai, where the PM will inaugurate a hospital.
