Adding fuel to the on-going row, five students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), torched a Manusmriti, a book which allegedly reads anti-women scripts and prescribes exploitation lessons against women on Tuesday. All the five students were aligned to the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) including three councillors who have resigned after the arrest of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar under sedition charges following an event held on February 9 on the campus.

The event was attended by around 50 students who were raising slogans against the teachings of Manusmriti. “A text which argues of discrimination against Dalits and women and treats them as second class citizens must be burnt,” said a student participating in the event.

Several students linked with the Left-wing student groups also participated in the event.

According to a source, despite getting no permission from the administration, the burning of Manusmriti took place. An administration staff said: “There was no permission granted by the university administration to hold such an event.”
