Eyeing polls, legislators utilise funds for development work

The decision on government formation in Delhi is still in doldrums but this has not deterred the legislators from sanctioning projects in their respective constituencies.

The MLAs are putting their sanctioned funds to the best possible use, since assembly polls are likely to be held in Delhi shortly.

Most of them in the city are busy sanctioning various projects for their respective constituencies from Rs 4 crore, sanctioned under MLA Local Area Development Fund.

The wide array of projects that the legislators are approving, ranges from construction of speed-breakers, security gates, toilets and roads in unauthorised colonies and slums clusters  to installing CCTV cameras and various repair works. Interestingly, over a dozen legislators have used most the amount allotted to them in less than four months of the sanction.

A few days back, former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote a letter to Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to allow his party’s 27 legislators to transfer Rs 20 lakh to Jammu and Kashmir CM relief fund.

The MLAs of the three main parties have been reaching out to people to seek their suggestions on how to spend it wisely.

Kejriwal has sanctioned funds for installation of hundreds of CCTV cameras in Sarojini Nagar, Bengali Market, Laxmi Bai Nagar, SBS Marg and Baird Lane in his constituency.

He has also approved various projects to install water filter hydrant and construction toilets in slum clusters. Only Rs 87 lakh is left in his MLA fund.

BJP MLA from Shahdara, Jitender Singh Shunty, has spent almost all the amount while only Rs 1.59 lakh is left in his funds.

Similarly, Congress MLAs are not left behind too. Asif Mohammad Khan from Okhla and Hasan Ahmad from Mustafabad have spent most of their funds too.

While Khan is left with Rs 21.03 lakh, Ahmad has Rs 23.88 lakh in his kitty.

Contrary to them, five legislators have not even spent a single paisa from their allotted funds, which includes AAP’s legislators —Ashok Kumar Chauhan and Somnath Bharti and three BJP’s Pawan Sharma, Harmeet Singh and Neel Daman Khatri.
