A Delhi Police sub-inspector allegedly shot a 27-year-old woman before killing himself with his service revolver in South-west Delhi’s Dwarka area on Sunday morning. Police said the accused, Vijender Bishnoi (30), a native of Rajasthan, was having an extra-marital affair with a the victim identified as Nikki Chauhan, a freelance journalist who was separated from her husband.

According to the police, Bishnoi, a sub-inspector, was posted at the Ranhola police station and was on leave for the past two weeks.

The police said Bishnoi joined duty on Sunday. He allegedly asked Chauhan to meet him at Dwarka Sector 4 park. Police said the incident took place around 9:45 am when the duo was sitting on a bench and talking. The argument took a violent turn and Bishnoi allegedly pulled out his service revolver and shot thrice at Chauhan, before shooting himself. According to the police, Bishnoi shot at himself twice. One bullet hit him in the abdomen and the other his chest, police said.

“Vijender Bishnoi shot Nikki Chauhan thrice with his service revolver. After a few minutes, he shot at himself twice,” a senior police official said.

Hearing gunshots, residents rushed to the park and saw the two lying in a pool of blood, after which they made a PCR call. The police reached the spot and rushed the duo to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre, where Chauhan was declared brought dead. Bishnoi, too, succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

According to the police, Chauhan used to live with Bishnoi in the Uttam Nagar area. She had lodged a complaint of rape against him, but withdrew it later.

Police said initial investigations suggested that Chauhan had allegedly extorted money from Bishnoi to withdraw her complaint and had coaxed him to marry her.

When Bishnoi’s wife came to know about the affair, she lodged a police complaint against him and senior officials were soon going to initiate a departmental inquiry against the policeman.

Bishnoi had joined the force as a sub-inspector in 2008. The police said he was involved in an intimate relationship with Chauhan for around the past three years. They added that families of both Bishnoi and Chauhan were informed about the incident.
