Delhi university has decided to include English in the manadatory list of languages offered as part of the foundational course in its four-year degree programme. Earlier, North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) had demanded for the scrapping of Hindi/MIL(Modern Indian Language) as well. Now DU students have the option to choose between English and HIndi/MIL.
J M Khurana, dean of student welfare said, ‘Keeping in mind the hardships Hindi/MIL might cause to the students who belong to communities that speak neither Hindi nor one of the MIL, DU has decided to include English as optional for Hindi/MIL.’
Chinglen Khumukcham, president of NEFIS, said, ‘Through our campaign we have achieved great success. We are thankful to Delhi university and the Government of India. We are glad to inform that owing to our hard struggle the university administration was finally forced to accept to our demands and withdraw the clause of compulsory language course.’
According to him, the university administration had informed NEFIS that their demands have been accepted. Earlier, Delhi university introduced a new syllabus according to which to do a foundational course, students are required to opt for a language either Hindi or one of the Modern Indian languages (MILs) during the first year.
