Elderly woman dies in Krishna Nagar fire

An elderly woman was charred to death in Krishna Nagar area here as a fire broke out in a three-storey building she lived in with her family, police said.

70-year-old Urvashi Mahajan was on the ground floor of the house when the fire broke out. The other members of the family evacuated the house but Urvashi Mahajan, who was in a ground floor room, could not flee in time. Several attempts by her family members to save her failed due to the inferno, police said.

According to fire officials, they received a call about the fire at about 4 pm after which four fire tenders were rushed to the spot. By the time the time fire was doused, Mahajan was dead. Firefighters brought the lady’s body out which was then shifted to the mortuary of GTB Hospital for postmortem. Police believe suspect short circuit to be the reason for the fire. Mahajan lived in the building with the families of her three sons, all of whom are traders, police said.
