Aiming to increase the green cover of trans-Yamuna regions, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) on Wednesday announced to plant nearly 3.5 lakh trees. The Corporation has also issued a helpline for free distribution of plants at people’s doorsteps as it has aimed to ensure active participation of residents, local bodies, institutions, government bodies, etc.
The Corporation informed that the Corporation would plant one lakh saplings of different kinds of trees within two days in the areas under its jurisdiction. Earlier, the civic body had started ‘Van Mahotsav’ on July 20 and so far 30,000 saplings have been planted and now intensifying the drive, 1, 00,000 saplings of trees and 2,50,000 saplings of shrubs would be planted on August 27-28.
“All EDMC departments would be involved in this drive and saplings and shrubs would be planted in premises of its own and other government institutions like hospitals, schools, dispensaries, parks community centres. As many as 2,500 green strips, which include roadsides, have been identified for this purpose and the number of locations is likely to increase. Active participation of RWAs, Market Welfare Associations and citizens would be sought for plantation and their maintenance,” said Standing Committee Chairman Jeetendra Chaudhary.
