East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has demanded over Rs 12 crore as service tax from Directorate of Education of Delhi government.
‘In case of government properties’ service charge in lieu of property tax is payable which is 75 per cent of the property tax,’ said Sajjan Singh Yadav, municipal commissioner of the EDMC.
In a letter written to Director of Education Department he has demanded over Rs 12.46 crore service tax in lieu of property tax from the department.
According to Yadav, the corporation did a survey of taxable properties of education department in its area and found 136 properties are taxable. As per the estimate of the corporation the outstanding is from 2004-13 as the department never paid tax.
‘We are estimating the tax outstanding of all government departments in our area and demand is being sent to them,’ said Yadav. The EDMC has already sent demand letters to Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Metro and properties of Central government and state government in its area.
