Of teaching and learning

Update: 2019-12-05 16:44 GMT

As teachers of Delhi University staged protest outside the office of the Vice Chancellor against a circular mandating appointment of guest teachers on permanent posts, quite a few aspects of higher education are thrown into highlight regarding not just provisions of learning, but also about many of those whose leaning and qualification are limited and are compelled to lie in disuse. The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) had called a strike and urged teachers to boycott all official duties in response to DUPA's decision to put the joining of ad hoc teachers in abeyance. The Delhi University Principals' Association (DUPA) reportedly decided to put the joining of ad hoc teachers and disbursal of their salaries under suspension in its meeting held on November 29. The teachers' association terming such a move as one to have "far reaching adverse consequences" and an attack on the "teaching profession" reflect the state of administration and the dismal state of placement of faculty. Given that colleges of Delhi University are often filled beyond capacity every year in some of the popular courses, the death of teachers is as much a reality as is the sad state of appointment of ad hoc teachers in this university system. Scores of professors and ad hoc teachers of Delhi University are out demanding the appointment, absorption and promotion of ad-hoc teachers whose services are also much in need. Over 4,500 teachers are currently working on an ad hoc basis in the Delhi University for the past several years. With increasing number of students every year and a limited faculty to cater to their learning, the education thus dispensed is bound to be of a compromised quality. The administrative decisions of the country's top notch university have an impact on thousands of individuals for a range of aspects. Also, in times of employment crisis, lateral entry of faculty by way of making permanent guest teachers instead of the numerous ad hoc appointees is unfair on many levels. The university must make decisions that do justice to both the teaching staff as well to thousands of students who harbour hopes of attaining quality and holistic education.
