Eatery turns away poor kids, FIR against owner

Days after Shiv Sagar restaurant in JanPath allegedly denied entry to unprivileged children who were accompanied by a woman, Delhi Police have registered an FIR against the owner of the restaurant on Tuesday. Meanwhile, sources said that a case under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the restaurant owner, Vidur Kanodia.

According to police, on Saturday evening, Sonali Shetty, a writer in Dehradun, had gone with her nine-year-old son to the Shiv Sagar restaurant at Janpath for lunch to celebrate her husband’s birthday. On a traffic signal, she met some street children and took nine of them along with her to the Shiv Sagar restaurant.

However, the underprivileged children were allegedly thrown out of the restaurant as Shetty demanded food to be served free of cost to them. Meanwhile, Shetty alleged that the restaurant staff said: “Shabbily-dressed children were not fit to be customers at their restaurant.”

On the other hand, the restaurant owner, Vidur Kanojia allegedly said: “The woman told my staff to feed the children for free because they are underprivileged. When we refused, she created a scene. She misbehaved with our employee which is when we asked her to leave.” According to the police, they received complaints from both sides on Sunday.

“Based on the contents of the complaints, necessary action will be taken,” said a senior police official.
On the other hand, sources said that a case under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC at the Barakhamba police station against Vidur Kanodia.
