In order to speed up development works in unauthorised colonies, the standing committee of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) on Thursday approved proposal to allow spending of councillor’s fund in the such colonies.

The proposal was passed by standing committee of EDMC and will be sent to the state government for final approval. Presently, there are over 325 unauthorised colonies in EDMC’s jurisdiction where local MLA, irrigation department and some other bodies look over the development works.

A councillor is only authorised to look after street lights, drains and other small activities.

BB Tyagi, chairman of standing committee of EDMC said, ‘considering the importance of development in unauthorised colonies, the committee has decided to give more power to its councillors. The committee has unanimously decided that the councillors will also spend his/her funds on other works like construction of roads, streets, drains and  dhalao (dumping ground), sanitation work and other activities too.’

He further added that citizens approach local councillors regarding development of their area. ‘East Delhi has majority of unauthorised colonies where lakhs of people including migrants reside. They approach local councillors regarding development of their colony.’

During the annual budget, the EDMC had doubled the councillor’s fund from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 core. ‘With the additional power, a councillor will be able to spend around Rs 2  crore in his/her ward’,
Tyagi added.
