Teachers, students and karamcharis of Delhi university marched together under the banner of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) on Thursday, from Ramlila Ground to the Parliament, protesting against the policies of Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD).

According to DUTA, the policies affect the academic health of Delhi university, rapidly bringing down its reputation.

The hundreds of teachers, students and karamcharis who participated in the protest march shouted angry anti-reform slogans. MPs from the broad spectrum of the opposition parties took part in the protest march and addressed the gathering at its end. Prakash Javadekar (BJP), Prabodh Panda (CPI), P K Mazumdar (RSP), Tarun Kumar Mandal (SUCI-Communist) and D P Tripathi (NCP) joined the DUTA leaders in solidarity to express their disgust and anger against the government.

DUTA said ‘The government makes tall claims about improving the state of higher education and giving our youth a competitive global advantage in the emerging knowledge economy. The fact that this is nothing but a lie can be seen from the state of affairs at DU where more than 4,000 teachers are currently forced to teach in ad-hoc and guest capacity and MHRD has not even insisted that the UGC’s 2006 guidelines for reservations in all entry-level posts must be implemented. By not doing so, the government has openly displayed its bias against SCs, STs and OBCs who, despite getting reservation in higher education, are seeing their hope of getting jobs in the future, shattered.’

Amar Deo Sharma DUTA president said ‘Despite our reasoned critique of the mechanical points system for appraisal and promotion of teachers and the subsequent decision by the UGC to scrap it, the MHRD now insists that it must be imposed. Anomalies arising out of the last pay-revision in 2006 have still not been resolved, as a result of which teachers are thoroughly demoralised and fed up.’
