The Delhi University election officer will forward the replies of candidates, who were served notices for flouting electioneering rules, of DUSU elections to Grievance Committee to take necessary action.
The election office had on Monday issued notices to all the students who filed their nominations for the DUSU election scheduled on September 9 for the violation of code of conduct order, National Green Tribunal (NGT) order and Lyndoh Committee recommendations.
“All the nominated candidates have submitted their replies stating that their opponents are responsible. I will be forwarding all the replies with documentary evidences to the chairperson of Grievance Committee for investigation and necessary action,” said D S Rawat, chief election officer.
“Others who have been shortlisted for nominations but withdrew their nomination or got cancelled have not responded. We are sending reminder to all of them, and if we don’t get reply by Wednesday evening it will be forwarded to chairperson of Grievance Committee,” added Rawat.
“We have not violated any election norms and therefore, have nothing to hide. Other student groups spend crores in campaign and litter the whole campus,” said Kawalpreet Kaur, All India Students’ Association’s presidential candidate.
“ABVP is completely against the abuse of papers in elections and we will try to reduce the use of paper. However, it will not be possible to completely do away with the use of paper in a campus consisting 1.5 lakh students,” said Saket Bahuguna, national media convener, ABVP.
“As a candidate I have not spent more than the Lyndoh committee’s stipulated amount of Rs 5,000. Regarding use of papers, we had taken plantation drives where thousands of plants were planted in the University to compensate for the use of paper,” said Nikhil Yadav, NSUI’s presidential candidate.
Taking note of the reckless wastage of paper in the form of posters, pamphlets, flyers and cards used for canvassing and campaigning in DUSU elections by various candidates, NGT in September had ordered the DU to ensure that this year’s election is eco-friendly and paperless.
