DU V-C sets up committee for teachers’ appointment

Update: 2016-05-19 23:03 GMT
The step was taken amidst the demand from the teachers’ community for the speedy appointment process.Currently, there are more than 4,000 teaching staff posts lying vacant, and out of 77 colleges, 22 colleges are running without permanent principals. Also, as many as 2,000 teachers are awaiting their promotion.

The three-member committee comprises the head of Geology department Devesh Sinha, chief of Plant Molecular Biology (PMB) JP Khurana and head of the faculty of Political Science, Navnita Chadha Behera.

Soon after his appointment, the DU V-C had resolved the appointment of a new selection panel, initiated by the then V-C professor, Dinesh Singh. Tyagi has also put a halt on the on-going interview process in various DU colleges.

Commenting on the work of the Committee, AK Bhagi, DU Executive Council (EC) member, said: “The committee would decide on the rules and regulations of appointments and promotions in the University.”
Bhagi, who represents, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s teachers’ wing National Democratic Teachers Front (NDTF) has requested the V-C to include elected representatives from the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA), academic and executive council members and a principal in the council.
He suggested making all eligible candidates part of the ad- hoc panel and said the interest of ad-hoc teachers should be protected.

“We want the university to make sure that no ad-hoc teachers who have worked the longest time should be thrown out. Similarly, for promotion we have demanded that the total tenure of service should be considered while appointment,” Bhagi said.

On the other hand, appalled by the University Grants Commission‘s (UGC) Gazette notification in which the committee has been given right to ask teachers to provide information on the workload and specialisation, teachers have already launched a protest against the decision.
