In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old post-graduate student of Delhi University committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room on Friday morning.
Shashi Shekhar, 21, who hails from Bihar’s Nalanda district, stayed alone in room number 111 of Hindu College hostel on the university campus. ‘He was found hanging by some students of the hostel around 9:10 am on Friday morning and they immediately informed the warden of the hostel,’ said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sindhu Pillai. ‘We received a PCR call at 9:30 am,’ he added.
The body has been sent for postmortem to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital in north Delhi. His family members have been informed. ‘Shekhar’s parents are professors at Nalanda University in Bihar,’ said a police official.
‘A lecture notebook has been recovered from Shekhar’s room where he has written - ‘This is my life ‘,’Pillai said. ‘It’s my story: Can we do nothing for the dead? For a long time there has been no answer to the question’. The note had his signature in Hindi,’ he added.
Shekhar topped his Bachelor of Arts (Hindi literature) examination with 82 per cent marks. He got a gold medal and a scholarship to pursue Master of Arts (Hindi Literature) in 2011,’ said Hindu College principal Praduman Kumar.
‘Shekhar was last seen around 2 am in the hostel. Then, he went to his room,’ said a hostel mate. ‘
A classmate telephoned him in the morning. But when Shekhar did not pick up the phone, she enquired from a hostel inmate Deepak about him. Deepak knocked on Shekhar’s door. Not getting any response, he peeped through the window and found Shekhar hanging from the ceiling fan,’ said a hostel staff, who did not wish to be identified.
