Delhi University students have decided to embark on a ‘cycle march’ or journey to spread the message of peace and have requested the leaders of India and Pakistan to support the cause. This initiative was taken in the wake of tensions between the two countries.
The students will start their journey from Kanyakumari and travel to Islamabad via Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Gandhinagar, Jaipur, Gurgaon, New Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Wagah border and Lahore.
Praveen Singh, a Masters student of Buddhist Studies said, ‘We feel that the time has come to improve e realtions between India and Pakistan. Mahatma Gandhi has always showed us the path of non-violence, his principles urged us to believe that peace is the only solution between two countries.’
Linda Luiz,a student of M Phill in Anthropology at Delhi University said that the journey was aimed at creating and demonstrating peace and friendship between India and Pakistan.
Due to mutual mistrust and hate, India and Pakistan spend huge amounts of money on defence, which could otherwise be used to fight poverty and hunger. ‘We want to change this by joining hands for peace in our neighbourhood. We will be starting from Kanyakumari on 1 June. We plan to cycle about 50 km every day – 25 km in the morning and 25 km in the evening (most of the journey will be along National Highways) and arrive at New Delhi by 31 July and the Wagah border on 14 August and celebrate 14 and 15 August ,’ said one student.
‘We are hoping to reach Islamabad by 31 August.
We will also be collecting signatures in support of the cause of love, peace and non-violence during the course of the journey,’ said another student.
The group comprises of more than ten boys and three girls from Delhi University.
‘Students across the country from various universities have also decided to participate. They are sending us the signed letters and we have posted the details on Facebook too,’ the group said.
