A Delhi University student committed suicide after her boyfriend’s parents stalled their marriage over dowry demands. The boy’s parents had demanded a car from her parents, which was subsequently refused.

The incident took place on Tuesday night, when Mukesh, a chief sub-editor at a hindi newspaper went to meet his girlfriend at her residence in east Delhi’s Krishna Nagar area. At around 11.45 pm, he saw the victim hanging from a ceiling fan located in her bedroom. Mukesh raised an alarm and told her parents, who were at the ground floor with his family members.

On Tuesday evening, Mukesh’s mother and sister went to the residence of Sabina (20), who was a final year B.Com student. She was in a serious relationship with Mukesh for the last few years. Recently, the victim told her parents about Mukesh, and they accepted the union. For the same, Mukesh’s parents were invited on Tuesday.

A suicide note that has been recovered from her possession alleged that when both families were in conversation with each other, she hid behind the curtain to eavesdrop on their conversation. In the note she wrote that Mukesh’s mother demanded a car as dowry, if their marriage was to be solemnised. When Sabina’s family refused to accept their dowry demand, Mukesh’s family refused the marriage proposal.
Also, the victim heard that Mukesh also refused to marry her only because her parents are unable to deliver on their dowry demand on the day of their marriage. After she heard this news, she went upstairs and locked her room. In the suicide note she claimed that she had recorded all their conversations on her mobile phone. Few minutes later, Mukesh went to her room to inform her about his decision, where he saw Sabina hanging from a ceiling fan.

Immediately she was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. ‘A case under the appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and investigation is on from all plausible angles,’ a police official added.
