DU reaches out to the disabled, set to fill up 200 vacant positions

In a major boost to the employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, University of Delhi has stepped up efforts to appoint them in nearly 200 vacant teaching and non-teaching positions in the varsity in that category. DU colleges like Gargi, Miranda House, St. Stephens and ARSD have already issued notifications in that regard.

Infrastructure would also be upgraded in the colleges to make them PwD friendly, an official said on Wednesday.

“Around 200 posts in teaching and non-teaching staff have been created. The move has come after Supreme Court judgment passed in 2013, which had asked the university to follow the roster system. This will boost employment opportunities for the PwD applicants,” said Anil Aneja, nodal officer (PwD) at DU.

Despite having seats reserved for the PwD category, many colleges did not move ahead but now, they are taking steps to fill up those positions. “Teachers from PwD category were still appointed, but in non-teaching staff their ratio was a minuscule. Many posts were lying vacant. Now, administrative, desk, technical and non-technical jobs have opened up for that category,” said Aneja. Also, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment have provided grant to the university for development of infrastructure in its various colleges.

“Every college doesn’t have facilities for the people with disabilities. Work will be carried out in 59 colleges for creating infrastructure to make them PwD friendly,” said Aneja.
