Both the drivers have sustained minor injuries. Eyewitnesses said that the driver was visibly drunk and was heading towards Karol Bagh, in his Hyundai Verna. He further said the entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed near the temple premises.
According to police officials, at around 11.30 pm on Monday night, the driver of the radio taxi had parked his car near the Jhandewalan footpath to inquiring about the directions. Suddenly, a speeding Hyundai Verna came from behind and crashed on the rear of the taxi. ‘The impact of the crash was so massive that the cab further rammed into the railings of the Hanuman temple’, a police officer said. ‘Alcohol was recovered from the Verna and the drunk driver was arrested immediately,’ the officer added.
Within a span of one week, Delhi has witnessed three severe drunken driving accidents. On the weekend following these three incidents, night-checking on drunken driving were conducted by the Delhi Trafic Police and 247 drivers were prosecuted for driving under alcohol influence. The police officer said that till 15 August this year, around 20,400 drivers have been fined for drunken driving in the city.
Delhi Police recently wrote to the transport department asking for revocation of about 16,000 driving licenses of repeat offenders in drunken driving cases.
