Two men including a drunken policeman mowed down a 10-month-old boy, identified as Gopal, while his grandmother was critically injured in east Delhi’s Akshardham area on Sunday. One of the drivers has been nabbed by the locals while the other cop managed to flee the spot.
The incident took place on Sunday evening at around 5.30 pm when constable Ashok along with one Pradeep went to a fish market in Mandawali area. They bought raw fish from the market and asked the shopkeeper to fry the fish but he denied as he is supposed to sell only raw fish and was not in the business of cooking. After having a scuffle with the shopkeeper the duo, who were under the influence of alcohol, left the place. Ashok, who too was drunk, was reversing his Ritz car when Gopal and his grandmother were hit. Ashok is a constable at Pandav Nagar police station.
After hitting the duo, they tried to flee but the locals nabbed Ashok. However, Pradeep managed to escape. A call was made to the police control room and in the meanwhile, both were rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital where doctors declared Gopal brought dead while his grandmother received critical injuries and is undergoing treatment at the hospital. However, the concerned police officials are alleging that at the time of the incident, Ashok was off duty and has been arrested.
After the incident took place, locals protested in the area and outside Mandawli police station.
Few of them claimed that they were thrashed by the cops during the protest.
None of the senior police officials are however, confirming the matter.
