The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on a ‘lab-on-chip’ technology to make available cost-effective diagnostic tests within the reach of public. The technology will have the potential to conduct 50 diagnostic tests at Rs 10 a month.

G Satheesh Reddy, scientific advisor to Defence Minister,  said the device will cost less than a dollar and allow people to perform up to 40-50 key diagnostic tests at home.

He said: “The ‘lab-on-chip’ project will make healthcare accessible to the entire population. The chip, connected to a central server, could be distributed to households every six months. It will also help gather crucial health-related data that can guide policy-makers and hospitals.”
