Done with HC, Chadha pins hope on trial court

Update: 2012-09-22 02:43 GMT
On Friday, Aruna Chadha, an accused in former flight attendant Geetika Sharma’s suicide case, withdrew her bail plea from the Delhi High Court with the liberty to move fresh bail in the trial court.

After the court posted the matter for November and refused to give an early date of hearing, Ramesh Gupta, senior advocate who has been appearing for Chadha, withdrew the bail plea.

Gupta told the court that if such a prolonged date is given, the whole purpose of bail application will be defeated as the police will file charge sheet in the case and it will be different then.

Justice Manmohan, refusing to grant early hearing, allowed Gupta to withdraw the plea with liberty to file fresh bail petition before the trial court.

Chadha, 40, was an official of the now-defunct MDLR Airlines where Geetika had worked. She sought bail saying that she had a seven-year-old daughter and old parents to look after. Chadha pleaded to the court that she was the sole bread earner of her family.

‘Applicant [Chadha] has old and ailing parents [father 71 years and mother 63 years] and both are suffering from heart and other ailments,’ the plea said.

She claimed that the material collected by police did not show that she was involved in abetting Geetika’s suicide.

‘The bare perusal of the FIR [first information report] and the material collected by the investigating agency does not show that the applicant is involved in any manner in the abetment of suicide or its conspiracy,’ the bail plea said.

GOVIND KANDA’S BAIL EXTENDED

A Delhi court has extended the interim bail of Govind Kanda, brother of former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda and an accused in the Geetika Sharma suicide case, till 10 Oct. He has been booked for ignoring warrants in a 14-year-old dud cheque matter. The bail was granted by District Judge H S Sharma. On 10 September, the court had granted bail to Govind Kanda till 21 September on a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and a surety of the same amount.

On the directions of court, Gopal Kanda and his brother Govind, were declared proclaimed offenders in the cheque bounce case, which they settled out of court last month. Earlier this month, police registered a case against them for avoiding court’s warrant.
