DJB to increase number of trips by water tankers

Delhi Jal Board has decided to increase the number of trips its water tankers make across the city. DJB tankers approximately make 6,000 trips a day to fulfill the demand for water across the city. In the areas such as Rajokari, Meharauli, Chhatarpur and nearby localities, trips by water tankers were increased from 300 to 370 per day. In Sangam Vihar, Devli Village and other nearby areas, trips by water tankers had increased from 200 to 300 trips a day.

‘Earlier, the trips by water tanker were enhanced from 5,000 to 5,500 a day across the city. However, due to the rising demand and delayed monsoons, the board had increased its trips to 6,000 a day,’ said a senior Delhi government official.

‘It was observed that more than 75 per cent of the complaints were received from the areas under the four divisions of south Delhi. We have enhanced the number of tankers to these areas with immediate effect for the entire summer season,’ said a DJB official.

In some rural areas of south-west Delhi, the number of trips were increased from 315 to 480 a day and in many rural and unauthorised colonies of west Delhi, the number increased from 750 to 900 a day for this summer season. The delayed monsoon has also increased Delhi’s dependency on the neighbouring state of Haryana for raw water to fill their water treatment plants. ‘The Chandrwal and Wazirabad water treatment plants are dependent upon raw water released by Haryana in the Yamuna River. If the monsoon hits Delhi soon, the availability of raw water will increase,’ said the official.

According to city’s population, which is approximately 1.7 crore, every resident on an average should get 220 litres of water per day. However, due to gross mismanagement of water supply and inequitable distribution, water is not available to everyone. While areas such as Palam, Biswasan, Chattarpur and Mehrauli receive just 20 to 35 litres of water per day daily, areas under New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment receive 400 to 500 litres per person daily.
