DJB starts trial run of interceptor sewage project

Update: 2014-09-06 23:54 GMT
Delhi Jal Board on Friday started the trial run of the interceptor sewage project aimed at checking pollution of Yamuna.

The trial run for the first-phase, involving interception of 9 million gallons per day of sewage in Palam drain and diverting it to Pappan Kalan Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) started on Friday. The project involves laying of parallel channels in a 59 km length along the three major drains of Delhi, in Najafgarh, Supplementary and Shahdara drains, the DJB officials said.

These will intercept sewage from the several smaller drains that flow into these three drains, carrying it to the nearest sewage treatment plant and discharging the treated effluent back into the main drains before they meet the Yamuna.

The project was expected to be completed before the 2010 Commonwealth Games but got delayed. It was finally inaugurated in December 2011 and was supposed to be operational by 2014-end. At present, there are more than 1,600 unauthorized colonies and 1,000 JJ clusters in the area.

‘There are no sewerage infrastructures in these habitations and because of various complexities involved, it is not possible to lay the required infrastructure. There are 189 rural villages, which are not yet connected to the sewerage infrastructure. Cumulatively, about 45% of the area of the national Capital with a population of around 40-50 lakhs is not under sewerage services.

In some areas, there is generation of both solid and liquid wastes. There being no sewerage infrastructure in these areas, the sewage is being released into the open storm water ditches/drains, which finally finds its way into the Yamuna,’ said Delhi Jal Board in a press statement.

‘The project is divided into six different packages and involves interception of sewage flowing in around 180 subsidiary small drains and conveying it to the nearest Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to ensure that only treated sewage is discharged into major drains. The works that come under these six packages are: Intercepting chambers and trash racks for remaining floating material and silt, interceptor sewer, manholes, SPS and rising main,’ it said.
