The board had assigned a consultant to audit 36 existing sewage treatment plant with a design capacity of 604 million gallon per day at 23 locations.
‘The consultants were directed to carry out an in-depth and exhaustive door-to-door survey, of all the sewered and the unsewered areas in th Delhi,’ said DJB officials.
The draft master plan has been uploaded on DJB’s website. The draft is being sent to the NGOs, IITs, various stakeholders and other organisations with relevant expertise, for their suggestions and comments, so that it can be finalised,’ he added.
He further informed that SMP 2031 is likely to be finalised by October 2014. DJB spokesperson said that an efficient sewage system is the basic infrastructural need of the city. ‘As the population of Delhi, has increased from 4 million people in 1971, to around 18 million people today, the existing infrastructure of the city needs to be revamped and augmented to provide an improved and planned sewage system in the city,’ he said.
The challenge for the board is to provide a sewage facility that would cater to the future needs of the city and maintain the quality and the effectiveness of the existing drainage system simultaneously.
