The first episode of Satyemev Jayate has created a positive impact in the Millennium City, Gurgaon. The episode that was aired on Sunday focused on female foeticide in the country. On Wednesday, district administration of Gurgaon has started a helpline number ‘102’ through which anyone can inform about clinics or hospitals where sex determination test is done illegally.

A meeting between the District Administration of Gurgaon and the Task Force was held on Wednesday. It was decided that the ‘informer’ would be rewarded with Rs 21,000 by the administration. Also, with immediate effect, the administration would take action on the same. From now onwards, no ultrasound of a pregnant woman would be possible without submitting an identity card of the woman and the person accompanying her.

The helpline number could be accessed from Wednesday onwards. Earlier, this helpline number was used to call ambulances. But now the number will be activated to register complaints against the person or clinic/hospital involved in the illegal sex determination test.

The special task force would keep a record of every hospital and clinic where pregnant women go for their general ultrasound during their pregnancy. The district administration has informed the radiologists of the hospitals that ultrasound could be done only in certain ultrasound centres. In Gurgaon, there are 135 ultrasound centres, including four government-run ones.

Apart from this, to stop female foeticide the district administration has proposed that they would make a CD of the episode of Satyamev Jayate that was aired on Sunday and distribute it in villages, where it would be telecast in the panchayat meetings to create an awareness among the public.

An officer of health department said that in the year 2012, for every 1,000 boys there are 843 girls. To avoid this discrimination, the Child welfare Committee is planning to organise nukkar natak at various places.

Citizens of Gurgaon have appreciated this initiative and are eagerly awaiting for the implementation of this drive. This initiative can be an inspiration for other cities and towns to raise their voice against this crime. They have also suggested that the caller tune should be O re chiriya that was sung by Prasoon Joshi in that particular Satyamev Jayate episode.
