Women candidates steal the show

Update: 2017-04-26 18:38 GMT
After the leads started to convert to actual votes, men from all political hues danced wildly, clad in Saffron and Blue. But they were dancing for the 141 woman candidates who had struggled for all these months, and finally won from their respective wards.

Abha Chauhan, a social worker, who won from the Uttam Nagar ward, was flanked by her woman supporters and reached out to Rakhi Chauhan, the winner from Dabri ward and hugged her.

The women then followed by their husbands walked outside their polling booths to be greeted by their supporters.

"I have been working for society all this time and believe that I will be able to contribute to my ward and help in its development," said Chauhan.

Poonam Solanki, the AAP winner from Bapraulla ward, dedicated her victory to the people of her ward. "This is not my victory, this is their victory," she said.

However, this still did not mean that the women were free from the stranglehold of patriarchy.

"Yes, the reservation was a game changer. But if you look at the strategy employed by various parties, you will find that many had filed their nominations along with their husbands or family members," said Arti Mehra, former Mayor of unified MCD.

It was still not an easy fight for the women as many had won from close margins, like Anita Tanwar of BJP who won from the Chattarpur ward with a margin of only two votes.
