With sanitation workers on strike, garbage dumps mushroom in Gurugram

Gurugram: Travelling through Gurugram, especially the city's older parts, could be a nauseating experience for many citizens. With sanitation workers of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) on strike for the last five days, mounds of garbage have been piling up on the city roads.
However, more disappointment for citizens is the failure of the door-to-door garbage collection plan, that the civic agency came up with.
Five months into the implementation of this system, for which MCG contracted Chinese company Eco Green, various deficiencies have been witnessed in which has resulted in Gurugram not being able to achieve the tag of a 'clean and green city'.
Of the 434 participating cities in the Swachh Bharat rankings, Gurugram was placed 112th last year.
Though public officials can take consolation from the fact that the city performed better than certain areas of the National Capital Region, the ranking is still way below the expected mark.
With the cleanliness survey for 2018 having kicked off, challenges that were present earlier still remain in Gurugram.
Amid all this, sceptical residents have begun questioning whether the city's ranking will improve or slide further.
On their part, officials of MCG highlight that proactive steps have begun to be taken to improve the city's cleanliness.
The Gurugram civic body, in cooperation with the Chinese company, has begun the process of effective recycling of waste which, in, turn will also reduce the piling garbage at Bandhwari site.
However, there are several challenges that have created roadblocks in achieving this target.
Most environmental activists and members of resident welfare associations have, however, pointed out the slow progress made by MCG in improving the situation at Bandhwari landfill site.
Further, there have been complaints of how vacant areas around residential colonies are being used by the Corporation to continue dumping garbage.
MCG has, meanwhile, expressed optimism that steps are being taken to ensure that citizens effectively segregate waste generated in their homes.
