NEW DELHI: In recent years, the education department of the Delhi government has found that there is lack of training in primary schools teachers of the government schools. The child-centric view and the modern techniques of teaching the children are not being employed by the teachers.
In a bid to train these teachers, the Delhi government has started primary teacher training programme and this will continue throughout the year in various phases.
"Another cycle of capacity enhancement workshops has been initiated for the working pool of around 5,000 assistant teachers nurturing the students in the primary section of the Delhi government schools.
"The integrated in-service training programme for the continuous professional development of assistant teachers (Nursery and Primary) has been initiated by the Directorate of Education," noted an official.
He added that scheduled from May 14 to June 30, the 6 days-6 weeks in-service training is planned to be conducted during the ongoing summer vacations at SKV Kidwai Nagar in two phases to offer a choice of the convenient slot for the participating primary teachers.
"This endeavour aims at helping teachers facilitate the teaching-learning of all subjects like English, Hindi, Mathematics and Environmental Studies through music, games, art, etc. in schools," he said.
"With a holistic aim, child psychology, inclusive education, library management and storytelling have been included as a major part of this extensive training schedule.
"The master trainers among the assistant teachers and the qualified professionals in the fields of dance, music, art, storytelling, child psychology are the two categories of the resource persons rendering their services and learning to make this experiential learning initiative a success," said another official of the Delhi government.
He added that in all, 24 orientation sessions of one-and-a-half hours each has been introduced. This will cover almost 448 Sarvodaya schools with 4,500 sessions, benefiting over one lakh students.
Around 174 mentor teachers and 64 Resource persons have been engaged to accomplish the workshops.
This month, the Delhi Cabinet also approved the restructuring of teacher education institutions like State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs).
Currently, there are only nine DIETs catering to the needs of 11 revenue districts and that is putting an enormous pressure on limited resources of existing DIETs. The Department of Education, therefore, proposed the creation of two new DIETs -- Shahdara and Northeast Delhi. The department also proposed to upgrade the existing RK Puram DIET into a full-fledged DIET.
