NEW DELHI: Due to cremation of former External Affairs Minister of India, Sushma Swaraj, at Lodhi Road crematorium the traffic remained affected on Lodhi Road, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Neela Gumbad, Moolchand Flyover, Defence Colony Flyover, Lodhi Road Flyover and adjoining roads from 2 pm to 5:30 pm. Motorists were advised to avoid these roads and plan their journey accordingly.
The traffic remained affected near Lodhi Road due to the cremation of former foreign minister Sushma Swaraj, police said on Wednesday. Swaraj passed away at AIIMS after suffering a cardiac arrest on Tuesday night. The last rites of Sushma Swaraj, who was the chief minister of Delhi from October-December 1998, were held at Delhi's Lodhi Road crematorium at around 4 pm on Wednesday evening.
Traffic on Lodhi Road, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, near Neela Gumbad, Moolchand Flyover, Defence Colony Flyover, Lodhi Road Flyover and on adjoining roads was affected from 2 pm to 5:30 pm, a senior police officer said. However, as the news was circulated on Wednesday morning, people were already cautious about the traffic diversions and changed routes accordingly.
Massive traffic arrangements were made and senior police officers from Delhi Police were present on roads leading to the crematorium to look after the arrangements by themselves. Delhi's Who's Who visited the cremetorium to take part in the last rites of formeer External affairs minister. Digniteries from foreign countries were also present at the crematorium. Swaraj was given full state honours after which her body was cremated in the electric crematorium.
