The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Thursday cleared a proposal for the construction of its headquarter building on over 8 acres of land near Pragati Maidan.

The headquarter of South Delhi civic body, presently located at Civic Centre, is likely to be shifted to the new building after its expected completion in 2018. The standing committee of SDMC cleared the proposal for construction of the building by NBCC on over 8.75 acres of land near Pragati Maidan.

The SDMC will have an added advantage by engaging NBCC for headquarter building as the same agency has been entrusted to construct the new exhibition cum convention centre over the land presently occupied by Pragati Maidan, said Shailender Singh Monti, chairman of the committee. The proposed land for construction of the building is in possession of SDMC for development of a district park, he said.

SDMC commissioner P K Goel said, "DDA has conveyed its nod for change in land use, hence the way is clear for constructing the building." The land is easily accessible from Ring Road and it is situated at a premium location.

"The building is likely to be commissioned by the end of 2018 as it will be constructed along with the new exhibition cum convention centre which will be directly monitored by Union government," Monti said.
