New Delhi: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Thursday organised a day-long capacity building workshop for sanitation and engineering staff to provide them a few feasible, easy and result oriented tips on integration of informal waste pickers, segregation at source, door to door collection, user charges and proper enforcement of the SBM rules in order to make entire exercise smooth and whole system well-oiled and fine tuned.
The concept of the 3-star garbage free city and the steps required to earn a better ranking were explained in plain words so that staff could easily translate the same into action.
SDMC officials said that integration of informal waste pickers with the formal exercise is of paramount importance as informal waste pickers are supplement to the Corporation efforts. As far as the exercise of door to door collection is concerned its success depends on the regular collection of segregated garbage, installation of GPS and RFID on collection vehicles and ICT enabled monitoring. The horticulture, park and garden waste must be separated in the parks as far as possible before collection and transportation. The sweepers should be provided with personal protective equipments like uniform, hand gloves, raincoats etc.
Sweeping in residential, public and commercial areas must be ensured as per SBM manual. The concept of garbage free city expects accomplishment at all levels. No littering or garbage should be visible on the streets, outside
collection centres, in storm drains and water bodies and a survey should be conducted to assess requirement of liter bins in floating people areas, they said.
