NEW DELHI: Bihar RJD MLA Chandra Shekhar has been detained pending an inquiry by the authorities at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi for allegedly carrying bullets in his luggage.
Shekhar was apprehended at the Delhi airport on February 20 on charges of carrying ten bullets in his luggage. However, after the registration of the case he was allowed to board the flight.
Sources said that Shekhar was detained for a brief period after he failed to provide any relevant documents for carrying the bullets.
The bullets were found in his luggage by CISF personnel during baggage checking.
He has been booked under Arms and Ammunition Act and further investigation is underway. Sources said that the MLA has a licenced weapon and the bullets were left inside the baggage by mistake.
The MLA was intercepted by a CISF personnel during baggage checking on on Wednesday at the Indira Gandhi International Airport while he was about to take a flight to Patna. Ten live bullets of 3.15 bore were recovered from the passenger, the officials said. He was not allowed to take the flight and was handed over to the police.
The matter came to light when under routine baggage X-ray checking the CISF came through the baggage of Chandrashekhar.
The CISF personnel on duty noticed 10 bullets in his baggage. Soon, the senior officers were informed and the MLA from Madhepura was detained for questioning.
"On February 20, one person Chandershekhar a resident of Madhepura Bihar was apprehended with 10 live Rounds of 3.15 bore at SHA by CISF at T-2. The said pax was departing for Patna through Go Air. A case was registered under sections of 25 Arms act. The arrest of alleged was deferred. Case is pending investigation," said Sanjay Bhatia, DCP Airport.
