Greater Noida: Disturbing visuals of an African national studying in Greater Noida's Sharda University being lifted up and thrown out of the university campus by private guards have once against raised concerns over racism-related attacks on African nationals in the country and their safety.
Ahmad Tameem, a Kenyan national student, pursuing BBA at the university, has alleged that the university guards constantly treat him like a suspect, despite him having a yniversity I-card at all times.
Following the incident, the university has suspended seven of its guards.
Police have, meanwhile, registered an FIR against 10 unnamed people, including teh chairman and vice-chairman of the university.
On Friday, District Magistrate BN Singh took cognisance of the reports and formed a committee to investigate the matter.
The inquiry ordered by the District Magistrate will be conducted by a team comprising the Suniti Singh, Superintendent of Police, Greater Noida, and Additional District Magistrate (E) Vineet Kumar, Gautam Buddh Nagar.
"The SPRA and ADM (E) will investigate the matter and submit a report in two weeks. They will speak to all the foreign associations and assure them safety. Whoever is found at fault, we will take strict action against them," Singh said on Friday.
On the directions of Ajay Pal Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police, Greater Noida, police have also recorded the statement of the victim and an inquiry has been ordered in the case.
"Following his statement, we have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. He has said that the guards threw him out on the directions of chairman and vice-chairman of the university," said Sharma.
This, however, is not the first time when students have been roughed up at Sharda University.
Many other students have alleged that such behaviour by private guards is common in the university campus and it is only when things get out of hand that the administration intervenes.
