Police chief briefs HM Amit Shah on Hauz Qazi incident; 9 held

NEW DELHI: After normalcy was restored in Central Delhi's Hauz Qazi, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik on Wednesday briefed Home Minister Amit Shah on the trouble in the area and steps taken to ensure peace after a minor scuffle over parking issue led to a temple being vandalised in Lal Kuan. Patnaik told Amit Shah the situation was now normal and under control. Meanwhile, Delhi Police held 9 in the Hauz Qazi incident including 4 major and 4 minor while the age of one of the accused is being verified.

Patnaik told reporters after his meeting with Shah that four people were arrested for the trouble on Sunday night. "We had a general briefing on the incident and we told him that the situation is normal in the area. The briefing was about that. General action has been taken, legal action will also be taken," he told the media adding that CCTV footage is also being analysed and investigation is underway.

Peace was restored in the area on Tuesday night after representatives of both the communities did a press conference denouncing hate and communalism and appealing for peace and brotherhood. Delhi Police also did a commendable job and senior Police officers including the District DCP were continuously monitoring the situation and holding talks with both sides of the groups.

Locals on Wednesday offered prayers at the Durga temple which was vandalised during clashes between two groups in Hauz Qazi area on June 30. People did 'aartis' and worshipped at the temple during early hours of the day. AAP MLA from Ballimaran assembly constituency Imran Hussain, said that the situation was under control and shops have also been opened. "No one wants clashes here and markets have also opened. I congratulate Delhi Police which brought the situation under control. I personally went to the mandir and met the pujari there. We should not politicise the incident," Hussain said.
