Passion crimes: When love and hate collide

New Delhi: Valentine's Day, being considered as an occasion to show feelings of love, affection and friendship, but not every love story has a happy ending, some ends on tragic notes. Data provided by Delhi police reveals that the murder due to passion related issues still happening in the city. According to the data, in the year 2018, as many as 513 murder reported in which "Passion" related killings accounted for 11 per cent of all murders. In 487 murder cases, 9.74 per cent was because of passion in 2017. The crime of passion includes illicit affairs, betrayal, obsession, love affair.

Last year a 23-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend in Delhi's Alipur area. Police claimed that the accused was obsessed with the victim as he had written her name on his hand through the sharp object. The girl wanted to discontinue her relationship with the accused which led to the murder. The murder happened in the forested area of Alipur near the canal where the accused allegedly dragged her to the bushes and strangulated her to death. He even punched her face a few times so that she could not be identified.

In the year 2016, as many as 528 murders reported from city 13 per cent were sex-related whereas in the year 2014 around 10.87 per cent out of 586 murders were sex-related. "In 2015, 9.61 murders related to sexual indulgences," said the Delhi Police data. Dr Nand Kumar, Professor of psychiatry from AIIMS stated that it depends on the person's cognitive flexibility of the brain and coping mechanism from acute unexpected stressful situation arising from illicit relationship or betrayal. After a person comes to know about any betrayal or an illicit affair the brain intends to first deny the incident where the person cannot believe what he or she had seen or listen, the intense stressful visual-verbal communication.

"Subsequently there is sudden agitation or anger ( due to the sudden collective firing of a brain cell or neurons in a certain area of the Brain associated with emotions) which can happen on the same time or sometimes where brain stop thinking about the consequences and commit the incident," said Kumar. Subsequent the person develop guilt related to incidents and accept it.
