Delhi Assembly: Budget Session to begin in first week of March

The Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government is likely to convene the Budget Session of the Delhi Assembly in the first week of March, before the announcement of Delhi Municipal elections that are scheduled to be held in April.

The Arvind Kejriwal government is planning to give more focus on education and health. For the third consecutive year, the majority share of the annual Budget would be allocated for education.

The Centre, meanwhile, has steadily been reducing the Budgetary allocation on education, with the share of GDP expenditure on education falling in the last three years. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said his government had unleashed a "revolution" in education and health sectors.

In its first Budget, the AAP government increased the allocation for education as well as health by 50 percent. In its second annual Budget for the financial year 2016-17, the government earmarked 22.55 per cent and 15.53 percent of the Budget for education and health sectors, respectively.

"These are two of the most important priorities of this government. The AAP government believes that the money spent on education and health is not an expense but an investment into the well-being of the coming generations," said Kejriwal. He further said if people are educated and healthy, the country will progress swiftly.

The Delhi government has adopted a three-fold approach towards education: first, providing adequate facilities and infrastructure; second, ensuring adequate number of capable and dynamic teachers; and finally, improving curriculum and teaching practices to ensure that students are not merely excellent professionals, but responsible citizens and good human beings.
